SHERBORNE MUSEUM is delighted to have been awarded funding to hold a second event to celebrate the Cultural Olympiad
This time the museum is using its historic silk collection to present FREE WEEKEND EVENTS.
FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY!
LEGENDS OF SILK
Dragons, worms and Sherborne Silk will offer free family fun entertainment and workshops.
Join us on Friday 24th July 6.30 - 8.30 for a glimpse behind the scenes at items from the Silk Collection followed by a talk on Smuggling by Bonny Sartin.
Bonny, well known for his one man shows and as a member of the Yetties Folk Group, was born at Thornford and has resided in Sherborne for many years.
Tastings of Chinese food will be available later in the evening.
Learn more about the silk story! Silk worms, cocoons, raw silk and mulberry trees will also be on show!

See how they have grown! Learn more about the silk worm life cycle and Sherborne's silk industry.
Make a dragon to display in the Gardner Room or a kite. Take a cocoon home!

FREE, FUN FAMILY EVENTS ! - with an Indian flavour.
Sherborne Museum is delighted to be one of over 50 museums, libraries and archives to be taking part in the Festival of Storytelling - Bringing collections to life - which will be celebrated across the country to mark the start of The Cultural Olympiad on the weekend of 26 - 28 September. The four year programme of events will run right through to the end of the 2012 Olympic Games and has been funded by MLA (Museums Libraries and Archives) Council, MLA London, The British Museum Partnership UK project and Renaissance London. Drop in and see the eighteenth century Sherborne Friendly Society silk banners unwrapped for the first time in 30 years, photographed and re-wrapped in conservation materials.

Victorian Lantern Show
Friday 13th October 2006
The Rotary Club of Sherborne will present a to benefit museum funds. Rene and Alan Marriott, well known for their shows at Dorchester Museum, will give their first show in Sherborne at the County Primary School, Harbour Road, on Friday 13th October starting at 7.30pm.
Slides from both the Sherborne Museum collection and their own renowned collection will be featured. Admission Adults £4, children 50p. Refreshments will be available and there will be a raffle. Tickets available at the museum and on the door.

Gerald Pitman Memorial Lecture
On Saturday 16th September 2006 this year’s Gerald Pitman Memorial Lecture will be held at The Old Schoolroom, Sherborne School for Boys at 2.30 when former pupil Professor Hugh Torrens will speak on the Sherborne historian, Joseph Fowler.
Tickets available at the museum for £3.50, children £1 or at the door. This includes tea.

Bring along unidentified items you have found. Somerset and Dorset County Finds Officer Coirstaidh Trevarthen will be delighted to see and date them.

FREE FEBRUARY 2006 HALF TERM FAMILY EVENTS
Sherborne Museum welcomed back Roman Soldier John Smith for Tuesday 14th from 11am - 3 pm
and on Thursday 16th reconstructive archaeologist Roland Williamson will bring his historic collection of shoes and hold a shoemaking workshop 11am - 3pm
Shaftesbury Abbey Museum will hold a calligraphy and illumination day on Wednesday 15th from 10am - 5pm. An exciting family day shedding light on illuminated documents led by Frank Garbutt and staff from the Dorset History Centre.
Sturminster Newton Museum will hold 'Sturminster and the Railway' at St Mary's Church Hall on Saturday 25th from 11am - 4.30pm

First Roman Day
Our first Roman Day proved a huge success. Archaeologist John Smith provided an all day presentation at the Museum on August 20th 2005 dressed in authentic Roman armour and welcomed dozens of visitors.
We hope to extend our programme next season to include more exciting events such as these.
